Too often we bask in our comfortable complacency and rationalize that the ravages of war, economic disaster, famine, and earthquake cannot happen here. Those who believe this are either not acquainted with the revelations of the Lord, or they do not believe them. Those who smugly think these calamities will not happen, that they somehow will be set aside because of the righteousness of the Saints, are deceived and will rue the day they harbored such a delusion. - Ezra Taft Benson

Help Single-Moms Prepare

The LDS church is doing a fundraiser to help single-parents (mostly moms) get a better education in order to provide for their families.

Would you consider giving a small or large donation to help?  These families really struggle and your gift can bless and lighten burdens - and....help children who would otherwise suffer more.  By donating and sharing this link - we all make the world a better place.  These women will leave college with a 2-yr. degree and then make a good difference in society and in providing for their families.

Thank you for anything you can do to help in this effort.

What Kind of Preparedness?

There are many ways to prepare.  Which are of most value?  Part of being able to deal with unforeseen circumstances is to be emotionally stable.  Sometimes it takes some work to get there, to let-go of past weights and problems, and move forward in new energies and hope.  Foot-zoning can be helpful with that as can other alternative solutions. (find someone in your area who does it.)

Spiritual, Mental, and Financial are also part of Preparedness.

When we speak of preparedness we most-often think of food and survival supplies.   These are important and can be life-saving.  We need to continue our preparations in all these areas.  But, I would suggest that of all ways in which we can prepare - Spiritual is most vital.  For if we are spiritually prepared, and ready, then...we will also be prepared in all the other ways.

Strong Temporal Homes

“Not only should we have strong spiritual homes, but we should have strong temporal homes.  We should avoid bondage by getting out of debt as soon as we can, pay as we go, and live within our means.  There is wisdom in having on hand a year’s supply of food, clothing, fuel (if possible), and in being prepared to defend our families and our possessions and to take care of ourselves.  I believe a man should prepare for the worst while working for the best.  Some people prepare and don’t work, while others work but don’t prepare.  Both are needed if we would be of maximum service to our God, our family, and our country.”  - Pres. Benson

WHEN distress or disaster comes (not "if)

“Do all of you ...have a year’s supply of the basic commodities?  Be sure that you consider it very seriously....WHEN distress or disaster comes ...we must be ready to help each other.”  - Pres. Kimball

FAR SHORT of being truly PREPARED

“...we still have a great concern that as a people we are far short of truly being prepared.  The heart of welfare services’ success is not church preparedness but member preparedness....I am afraid that some members are laboring under the illusion that in difficult times the Church will take care of them.  This is not so.  The Church is prepared to take care of a limited number of members for a relatively short period of time.”

Second Coming

"This is the last and great dispensation in which the great consummation of God's purposes will be made, the only dispensation in which the Lord has promised that sin will not prevail.  The Church will not be taken from the earth again.  It is here to stay.  The Lord has promised it and you are a part of that Church and kingdom -- the nucleus around which will be builded the great kingdom of God on the earth....How I wish we could get the vision of this work, the genius of it, and realize the nearness of that great event.  I am sure it would have a sobering effect upon us if we realized what is before us."  Benson

Being Self-Reliant

"Apparently there will be certain tribulations that will disrupt the nations of the world to the extent that the Church will have to be self-reliant." - Pres. Benson

“Unfortunately, there has been fostered in the minds of some an expectation that when we experience hard times, when we have been unwise and extravagant with our resources and have lived beyond our means, we should look to either the Church of government to bail us out.  Forgotten by some of our members is an underlying principle of the Church welfare plan that “no true Latter-day Saint will, while physically able, voluntarily shift from himself the burden of his own support”.   - Pres. Benson and Marion G. Romney -1980

....but if ye are prepared ye shall not fear.....

Abomination of Desolation

“In the light of these prophecies (abomination of desolation), there should be no doubt in the mind of any priesthood holder that the human family is headed for trouble.  There are rugged days ahead.  It is time for every man who wishes to do his duty to get himself prepared – physically, spiritually, and psychologically – for the task which may come at any time, as suddenly as the whirlwind.”  - Pres. Benson

Strong Homes; Spiritual and Temporal

Highest Priorities....

"We counsel parents and children to give HIGHEST priority to family prayer, family home evening, gospel study and instruction, and wholesome family activities.  However worthy and appropriate other demands or activities may be, they must not be permitted to displace the divinely-appointed duties that only parents and families can adequately perform."  First Presidency letter, 11 Feb. 1999

All that is Good is Spiritual

"We have been given direction, sometimes thought of as temporal in it's nature, such as tithing, fast offerings, the welfare program, the Word of Wisdom, chastity, obedience to the law of the land, and others.  Whatever their temportal aspect may be, they are given to us to build us up spiritually.  We can draw no hard and fast line between temporal and spiritual.  All that is good is spiritual." -President Henry D. Moyle

Earn Own Way - Become Self-Reliant

"I love the simple gospel truths as taught by the holy prophets, and I never tire of speaking about them. Since the beginning of time man has been counseled to earn his own way, thereby becoming self-reliant. It is easy to understand the reason the Lord places so much emphasis on this principle when we come to understand that it is tied very closely to freedom itself."

On this subject, Elder Albert E. Bowen said, “The … Church is not satisfied with any system which leaves able people permanently dependent, and insists, on the contrary, that the true function and office of giving, is to help people [get] into a position where they can help themselves and thus be free.”

"Many programs have been set up by well-meaning individuals to aid those who are in need. However, many of these programs are designed with the shortsighted objective of “helping people,” as opposed to “helping people help themselves.” Our efforts must always be directed toward making able-bodied people self-reliant."    Marion G. Romney

Frugality

"There is a wise saying 'Eat it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without.'  Thrift is a practice of not wasting anything.  Some people are able to bet by because of the absence of expense.  They have their shoes resoled, they patch, they mend, they sew, and they save.  They avoid installment buying and make purchases only after saving enough to pay cash, thus avoiding interest charges.  Frugality means to practice careful economy."  Elder James E. Faust

Voluntary Simplicity

I loved the phrase "Voluntary Simplicity" when I first heard it.  Groups of like-minded souls who are seeking to simplify their lives - are popping-up around the county and sharing ideas of how to let go of materialism and find greater peace in living daily life meaningfully.

A group member in Utah questioned "What do I really want in life?  Do I want to spend time with my children or more time making money to be spent on things that I don't really need?"  Voluntary Simplicity is a way to focus on life rather than on being so busy all the time 'getting things done'.  It's about getting rid of unessentials, things that are not that important to you, to make time for the core things that you really value more.

An 8 yr. old boy trimmed the amount of toys he had down to basic blocks and several other favorite items.  The rest he donated to charity.  He commented "I feel so good and I don't miss the toys.  I like spending time outdoors and fishing in our pond."

Linda B. stated "The things you buy really makes a difference.  Ask yourself 'Do I really need this?'  And (I would add): "Do I really want or love it'  "Does it enhance my life', 'Will something I have - do the same job?"

Group members say their lives are much richer for having downsized and become more aware of how they use their precious resources.  I concur with their findings.

The Lord's Library

"We are admonished to "seek out of the best books words of wisdom." (D&C 88:118).  Surely these books must include the scriptures.  Alongside them must be the words of the President's of the Church. "His word ye shall receive, as if from mine own mouth" (D&C 21:5).  These books make up what has been referred to as "the Lord's library" -- namely the standard works and the various volumes that contain the words of the different Presidents of the Church.  Of the latter volumes, that which would be of greatest importance to you would be the words of the current President of the Church, for his words are directed to our day and our needs.    - Teachings of Ezra Taft Benson, p. 137-138

Build a Reserve - even Small

"... set your houses in order. If you have paid your debts, if you have a reserve, even though it be small, then should storms howl about your head, you will have shelter for your wives and children and peace in your hearts. That’s all I have to say about it, but I wish to say it with all the emphasis of which I am capable."  President Gordon B. Hinckley, 1998

I am Concerned About People Not Preparing

I am concerned about those who are not seeing or feeling the need to prepare and to follow Prophetic Counsel.

In 1975 Bishop H. Burke Peterson reported on a study made by Utah State University regarding the Saint's response to storing food as counseled.  The study revealed that only about 5% of church members had a year's supply of meat products, 3% a year's supply of dried or canned fruits or vegetables, approx. 18% had a year's supply of grains.  In the milk group, only three families in a hundred had a year's supply of canned or powdered milk.  On the average, about 30 percent of Church had a 2-month supply of food.  And...this, after years of being counseled to attain it.

Seasons of Scarcity; Prepare for Emergencies

In June, 1867, Elder George Albert Smith taught "President Kimball (Heber C.) has been urging us strongly to store our bins with wheat and flour.  This may sound like strange counsel to those who, during most of their lives, have been in the habit of receiving their wages every Saturday, then, then, without further care, laying in their week's provisions.  But in this country, where we are liable to seasons of scarcity, it is requisite to prepare for such emergencies; hence the counsel to store up food is frequently given, and is absolutely necessary.  Yet, as a people, we are apt to neglect it, for the sun rises and sets, the seasons come and go with unfailing regularity, and we expect that every year will bring plenty; yet we have had years of scarcity, and may have again, and we are not safe unless we provide against them, and be prepared for a day of hunger.  Hence, in this respect and in many others, the Latter-day Saints have many things to learn. (Journal of Discourses, vol.12, p. 25)

Basic Preparedness Principles

“First, and above and beyond everything else, let us live righteously. …

“Let us avoid debt as we would avoid a plague; where we are now in debt, let us get out of debt; if not today, then tomorrow.

“Let us straitly and strictly live within our incomes, and save a little.

“Let every head of every household see to it that he has on hand enough food and clothing, and, where possible, fuel also, for at least a year ahead. You of small means put your money in foodstuffs and wearing apparel, not in stocks and bonds; you of large means will think you know how to care for yourselves, but I may venture to suggest that you do not speculate. Let every head of every household aim to own his own home, free from mortgage. Let every man who has a garden spot, garden it; every man who owns a farm, farm it.” (Conference Report, April 1937, p. 26.)    J. Reuben Clark

How to make a Compost Heap:

A productive garden requires a well nourished soil that needs to be reneewed and restored each year.  You can do that yourself by making a compost heap.  Here is just one idea of how to do it.

In an out-of-the way area (shaded if possible), mark off an area approx. 6'x6' and pile (as available) the following:  garden refuse, weeds, fruit and vegetable waste (no meats), dead leaves, lawn clippings, saw dust, wood ashes, egg shells.

Our Lord is Not a Novice

"Our Lord is not a novice.  He is not an amateur.  He has been over this course time and time and time again.  And if you think of this galaxy of ours having within it from the beginning, perhaps until now, one million worlds, and multiplying that by the number of millions of galaxies, one hundred million galaxies, that surround us, then you'll get some view of who this man we worship is."

Sprouting

"All grain is good for the food of man." (D&C 89:16), but He, the Lord, particularly singles out wheat.

Dry, whole, hard grains, when stored properly, can last indefinitely, and their nutritional value can be enhanced through sprouting, if desired.

Wheat Should Have Priority

"From the standpoint of food production, storage, handling, and the Lord's counsel, wheat should have high priority.  Water, of course, is essential.  Other basics could include honey or sugar, legumes (beans), milk products or substitutes, and salt or its equivalent."

Pres. Benson, God, Family, Country, p. 269

FUEL and Handyman Skills

"Wood, coal, gas, oil, kerosene, and even candles are among those items which could be reserved as fuel for warmth, cooking, and light or power. Some may be used for all of these purposes and certain ones would have to be stored and handled cautiously. It would also be well to have on hand some basic medical supplies to last for at least a year."

"Men should seek honorable employment and do their work well in order to provide for their own. Men who can perform useful skills with their hands will be in increasing demand. Handymen, farmers, builders, tailors, gardeners, and mechanics can and will prove a real blessing to their families and their fellowmen."   Pres. Ezra Taft Benson, Prepare Ye
