Too often we bask in our comfortable complacency and rationalize that the ravages of war, economic disaster, famine, and earthquake cannot happen here. Those who believe this are either not acquainted with the revelations of the Lord, or they do not believe them. Those who smugly think these calamities will not happen, that they somehow will be set aside because of the righteousness of the Saints, are deceived and will rue the day they harbored such a delusion. - Ezra Taft Benson

Lift the Whole World - Influence all of Humanity

President Joseph Fielding Smithsaid:  "While it may be said that we are but a handful in comparison to the world, yet we may be compared to the leven of which the Savior spoke . . . eventually will lift the whole world....."
Elder Boyd K. Packer added: "We can, and in due time certainly will, influence all of humanity.  It will be known who we are and why we are.  It might seem hopeless.  It is monumentally difficult.  But, it is not only possible, but certain, that we will win this battle against Satan." See: "We Will Lift the Whole World"

Building up Kingdom of God on Earth

"That same being who will assist in the building of a great city on the western boundaries of the State of Missouri, has all power; and when we purchase the land, and go and take possession of it, I do not think we will be driven from our own lands, if we mind our own business and do not meddle with our neighbors' business, and do not undertake to injure them in their rights and privileges, guaranteed to them by the Constitution of our country. If we conduct ourselves in a peaceable manner, I do not see why we may not dwell there as well as other citizens. We have the strongest assurance that such will be the case. These were promises made to us, before there were a hundred persons in this Church. It was promised that we should have a land as an inheritage; but we were commanded of God, to purchase the land. Now, when the time comes for purchasing this land, we will have means. How this means will be brought about it is not for me to say. Perhaps the Lord will open up mines containing gold and silver, or in some other way as seemeth to him best, wealth will be poured into the laps of the Latter-day Saints till they will scarcely know what to do with it. I will here again prophesy on the strength of former revelation that there are no people on the face of the whole globe, not even excepting London, Paris, New York, or any of the great mercantile cities of the globe-there are no people now upon the face of the earth, so rich as the Latter-day Saints will be in a few years to come. Having their millions; therefore they will purchase the land, build up cities, towns and villages, build a great capital city, at headquarters, in Jackson County, Missouri. Will we have a temple there? Yes; will we have a beautiful city? Yes, one of the most beautiful cities that will ever be erected on the continent of America will be built up by the Latter-day Saints in Jackson County, Missouri. Consequently, when congressmen and statesmen, and the great men of our nation, want to know what the future destiny of the Latter-day Saints will be, let them remember the words of your humble servant, who has addressed you this afternoon; for they will come to pass-they will be fulfilled. We have see too many revelations fulfilled, already, to be mistaken in regard to these matters. Amen."

Preparing to meet the Lord; Parable of Ten Virgins

Elder Lynn G. Robbins shares the following:
The parable of the ten virgins teaches us about how to prepare wisely to meet the Lord at His Second Coming. “Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins”. The ten virgins, according to Elder Bruce R. McConkie (1915–85) of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, “represent those church members who are looking for the Bridegroom to come; and the oil-filled lamps are symbolic of the Holy Spirit which lights the way before the saints.”  “And five of them were wise, and five were foolish.

Elder McConkie further explains that this parable is not about “good and bad, not righteous and wicked, but wise and foolish. That is, all of them have accepted the invitation to meet the Bridegroom; all are members of the Church … but only five are valiant therein.”

In the parable, only those with oil in their lamps were able to enter the house of the bridegroom. In modern times, only those worthy of a temple recommend may enter the house of the Lord.

Gathering is Part of the Gospel

"In various dispensations there are various differences in regard to certain requirements of the Gospel. For instance, in the day of Noah, when he preached the Gospel to the antediluvian world, he was given a special commandment, to build an ark, that in case the people would reject him and the message sent unto them, that himself and all who believed on him might be saved from the destruction that awaited them. In this dispensation there is a principle or commandment peculiar to it. What is that? It is the gathering the people unto one place. The gathering of this people is as necessary to be observed by believers, as faith, repentance, baptism, or any other ordinance. It is an essential part of the Gospel of this dispensation, as much so, as the necessity of building an ark by Noah, for his deliverance, was a part of the Gospel of his dispensation. Then the world was destroyed by a flood, now it is to be destroyed by war, pestilence, famine, earthquakes, storms, and tempests, the sea rolling beyond its bounds, malarious vapors, vermin, disease, and by fire and the lightnings of God's wrath poured out for destruction upon Babylon. The cry of the angel unto the righteous of this dispensation is, "Come out of her O my people, that ye partake not of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues." We believe also in the principle of direct revelation from God to man. This is a part of the Gospel, but it is not peculiar to this dispensation. It is common in all ages and dispensations of the Gospel. The Gospel cannot be administered, nor the Church of God continue to exist without it. Christ is the head of his Church and not man, and the connection can only be maintained upon the principle of direct and continuous revelation. It is not a heritory principle, it cannot be handed down from father to son, or from generation to generation, but is a living vital principle to be enjoyed on certain conditions only, namely-through absolute faith in God and obedience to his laws and commandments. The moment this principle is cut off, that moment the Church is adrift, being severed from its ever-living head. In this condition it cannot continue, but must cease to be the Church of God, and like the ship at sea, without captain, compass or rudder, is afloat at the mercy of the storms and the waves, of ever contending human passions, and worldly interests, pride and folly, finally to be wrecked upon the strand of priestcraft and superstition. The religious world is in this condition to-day, ripening for the great destruction which awaits them, but there is an ark prepared for such as are worthy of eternal life, in the gathering of the Saints to the chambers of the Almighty, where they shall be preserved until the indignation of God is passed.

How to Destroy America from Within

In 1958, Cleon Skousen authored the book The Naked Communist. In this book he cited 45 declared goals of the Communist party to destroy America from within. Included in these goals were:

Permit free trade between all nations regardless of Communist affiliation and regardless of whether or not items could be used for war.

Provide American aid to all nations regardless of Communist domination.

Grant recognition of Red China. Admission of Red China to the U.N.

Promote the U.N. as the only hope for mankind. If its charter is rewritten, demand that it be set up as a one-world government with its own independent armed forces.

Capture one or both of the political parties in the United States.

Use technical decisions of the courts to weaken basic American institutions by claiming their activities violate civil rights.

Get control of the schools. Use them as transmission belts for socialism and current Communist propaganda.

Soften the curriculum. Get control of teachers' associations.

Infiltrate the press. Get control of book-review assignments, editorial writing, and policy-making positions.

Gain control of key positions in radio, TV, and motion pictures.

Continue discrediting American culture by degrading all forms of artistic expression.

Eliminate all laws governing obscenity by calling them "censorship" and a violation of free speech and free press.

Infiltrate the churches and replace revealed religion with "social" religion. Discredit the Bible and emphasize the need for intellectual maturity, which does not need a "religious crutch."

Eliminate prayer or any phase of religious expression in the schools on the ground that it violates the principle of "separation of church and state."

Discredit the American Constitution by calling it inadequate, old-fashioned, out of step with modern needs, a hindrance to cooperation between nations on a worldwide basis.

Discredit the American Founding Fathers. Present them as selfish aristocrats who had no concern for the "common man."

Good, Better, Best

Many of us remember Elder Oaks timely message "Good, Better, Best" given in 2007.  As I ponder on which things in life which are most needful - I think today of spiritual and temporal preparedness.

So, by way of Good, Better, Best; I would like to share my perspective as far as Home Storage is concerned.

Good would be:  2 weeks water, 3 month basic supply of food one would normally eat (plus a can opener etc.) and enough supplies, hygiene, first-aid, needed medicines etc.)

Better would be:  3 month supply of food, water, supplies (including fuel, clothing etc.), and some alternative ways of cooking etc. plus, one-year supply of grains and beans etc. and some basic recipes.

Best would be:  All of the above plus knowledge of how to use them.  Alternative ways of cooking.  Tent in each home (as per suggested by Sis. Julie B. Beck; See:  Self-Reliance March 2010).  Knowledge (see resources on upper left of this site), Practice (see blogs on left side of this site part way down), Continual Learning, Obedience, Following Prophet no matter what, Having Spirit as our Guide, Heeding counsel, Living within means, Gardening, Preserving own food etc.

I know that the Lord helps us as we strive to obey what He has asked us to do.
1 Nephi 3:7 "...for I know that the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he commandeth them."

But, when we do not what He says; he sometimes cannot.
"I, the Lord, am bound when ye do what I say; but when ye do not what I say, ye have no promise."  Doctrine and Covenants 82:10

Where to start?

If you are new to Preparedness (or checking to see where you're at);  Start Here with the Basics
"Our Heavenly Father created this beautiful earth, with all its abundance, for our benefit and use. His purpose is to provide for our needs as we walk in faith and obedience. He has lovingly commanded us to “prepare every needful thing” (see D&C 109:8) so that, should adversity come, we can care for ourselves and our neighbors and support bishops as they care for others.

"We encourage members world-wide to prepare for adversity in life by having a basic supply of food and water and some money in savings.

"We ask that you be wise as you store food and water and build your savings. Do not go to extremes; it is not prudent, for example, to go into debt to establish your food storage all at once. With careful planning, you can, over time, establish a home storage supply and a financial reserve."
—The First Presidency, All Is Safely Gathered In: Family Home Storage, Feb. 2007, 1

Prepare NOW

If you aren't already prepared for what's to come --- start now.  Don't wait any longer.  None of us know what is ahead and when something will affect us.  Often we sit in the comfort of our own homes unaware of what might lie ahead.

In a powerful statement by President Ezra Taft Benson he tells us that things can happen where we live.  I urge you to ponder his words:

"Too often we bask in our comfortable complacency and rationalize that the ravages of war, economic disaster, famine, and earthquake cannot happen here. Those who believe this are either not acquainted with the revelations of the Lord, or they do not believe them. Those who smugly think these calamities will not happen, that they somehow will be set aside because of the righteousness of the Saints, are deceived and will rue the day they harbored such a delusion.
The Lord has warned and forewarned us against a day of great tribulation and given us counsel, through His servants, on how we can be prepared for these difficult times. Have we heeded His counsel?"

If you have worked to prepare --- continue on.  Add more to your storage until it's "pressed down, heaped over and running over in our own homes"  Julie B. Beck  (click on "Self Reliance" near the bottom of the page on her link to hear her full message)

Essentials of Home Production and Storage

This is a MUST HAVE booklet for EVERY home.  It's filled with all the basic information that you'll need to plan and prepare and follow-through.  The church has provided excellent materials applicable to everyone.  If you don't already have this booklet -- please order it now.  Waiting any longer could be too late!

Favorite Grain Mill/Wheat Grinder and Grain Recipe Book

This is, by far, our favorite grinder/mill.  It's quiter than most and can grind wheat, beans and corn into flour.  Ours has lasted for many years without any problems.  It's highly recommended for any who are trying to use more grains and beans in their diets.

Chef Brad will give you many ideas and recipes as to how to incorporate those beans and grains.  It's EXCELLENT information for any who want to improve their diets and use some of the grains that they may already have.

Set Your Houses in Order (President Gordon B. Hinckley)

In his monumental discourse entitled "To the Boys and to the Men"  President Gordon B. Hinckley urged all listening to get their lives and homes in order.  Part of that preparation includes financial.  This is part of what he said:
"I urge you, brethren, to look to the condition of your finances. I urge you to be modest in your expenditures; discipline yourselves in your purchases to avoid debt to the extent possible. Pay off debt as quickly as you can, and free yourselves from bondage. This is a part of the temporal gospel in which we believe. May the Lord bless you, my beloved brethren, to set your houses in order. If you have paid your debts, if you have a reserve, even though it be small, then should storms howl about your head, you will have shelter for your wives and children and peace in your hearts. That’s all I have to say about it, but I wish to say it with all the emphasis of which I am capable."

There will be Famines

"The Lord is not going to disappoint either Babylon or Zion, with regard to famine, pestilence, earthquakes or storms, he is not going to disappoint any body with regard to any of these things, they are at the doors....  Lay up your wheat and other provisions against a day of need, for the day will come when they will be wanted and no mistake about it.  We shall want bread, and the Gentiles will want bread, and if we are wise we shall have something to feed them and ourselves when famine comes." (Journal of Discourses, 18:121.)

Prepare for the Days of Tribulation

In his talk Prepare for the Days of Tribulation by President and Prophet Ezra Taft Benson -- we hear extremely imporant messages about food storage and preparation, gardening, being self-sufficient, planning for days ahead, and being obedient to counsel we have been given for many years.

His statement "The revelation to produce and store food may be as essential to our temporal welfare today as boarding the ark was to the people in the days of Noah" ought to truly motivate any who are sincere followers of Jesus Christ.  Afterall, my friend Cheryl reminded me, "He just wants to feed us".  (And... he knows what's ahead.)

Security in Wheat

“There is more salvation and security in wheat,” said Orson Hyde years ago, “than in all the political schemes of the world” (in Journal of Discourses, 2:207).

Efforts of Mobs

"We need not think that we are always going to be unmolested by the efforts of mobs, until wickedness is swept from this earth.  If we live, we shall see the nations of the earth arrayed against this people; for that time must come, in fulfillment of prophecy.  Tell about war commencing!  Bitter and relentless war was waged against Joseph Smith before he had received the plates of the Book of Mormon; and from that time till now the wicked have only fallen back at times to gain strength and learn how to attack the kingdom of God."  -Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, 26 vols., 5:, p.339

100 First Disappearing Items in Case of War

I don't know where this list came from "The First 100 Disappearing Items" but it's been passed around from time to time.  I share it because I think that it is definitely worth pondering as we all seek to be more prepared for any eventuality that may come.

The similar list that I was given several years ago was headed by this statement:  "This is a list of the 100 items that disappeared first during the Sarajevo War".

Hope it's helpful to you!

Why Suffering?

When we read the Doctrine and Covenants looking for a specific theme or thread to answer the question, Why suffering? it becomes apparent that the Lord knew and sanctioned the suffering that his Saints would be called upon to endure. Through the Prophet Joseph's successor, Brigham Young, the Lord continued his instruction: "My people must be tried in all things, that they may be prepared to receive the glory that I have for them, even the glory of Zion; and he that will not bear chastisement is not worthy of my kingdom. Let him that is ignorant learn wisdom by humbling himself and calling upon the Lord his God, that his eyes may be opened that he may see, and his ears opened that he may hear; for my Spirit is sent forth into the world to enlighten the humble and contrite, and to the condemnation of the ungodly" (D&C 136:31-33).
If we would enlarge our understanding of Why suffering? we must be humble enough to be taught from on high. When our understanding becomes one with God's, we will be constrained to admit that "all things have been done in the wisdom of him who knoweth all things" (2 Nephi 2:24). Although incomplete, the points enumerated above serve as a place to begin to understand the "hidden mysteries of my kingdom" (D&C 76:7), which God promised to make known to those who "fear me, and serve me in righteousness and truth unto the end" (D&C 76:5).

The Righteous Shall Hardly Escape

I explained concerning the coming of the Son of Man; also that it is a false idea that the Saints will escape all the judgments, whilst the wicked suffer; for all flesh is subject to suffer, and "the righteous shall hardly escape"; still many of the Saints will escape for the just shall live by faith; yet many of the righteous shall fall prey to disease, to pestilence, etc., by reason of the weakness of the flesh, and yet be saved in the kingdom of God. So that it is an unhallowed principle to say that such and such have transgressed because they have been preyed upon by disease or death, for all flesh is subject to death; and the Savior has said, "Judge not, lest ye be judged." (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 162-3.)
"There is one principle I would like to have the Latter-day Saints perfectly understand-that is, of blessings and cursings. For instance, we read that war, pestilence, plagues, famine, etc., will be visited upon the inhabitants of the earth; but if distress through the judgments of God comes upon this people, it will be because the majority have turned away from the Lord. Let the majority of the people turn away from the Holy Commandments which the Lord has delivered to us, and cease to hold the balance of power in the Church, and we may expect the judgments of God to come upon us." (Brigham Young, JD 10:335-36.)

Spiritual and Temporal Preparedness

Welcome to our new blog "All About Preparedness".  Our mission is to bless and strengthen one another while teaching and learning together; "Wherefore, he that preacheth and he that receiveth, understand one another, and both are edified and rejoice together" D&C 50:22.
We live in days that have been prophecied for generations.  As time draws nearer for the return of the Savior "....the whole earth shall be in commotion, and men's hearts shall fail them...."  D&C 45:26
We need not fear if we are prepared.  But, if we are not prepared -- we may be feeling it.  Hopefully that fear will lead those who aren't 'ready' to take action and prayerfully seek guidance as to where to start and what to do.  We hope this site will be helpful in that regard.

Over the past many years some of us have been feeling the strong need to get our homes and lives in order.  Part of that preparation is temporal and part is spiritual.  In fact, a good spiritual foundation promotes temporal preparation as well.

This blog is a compilation of the best information we have found on preparedness.  We'd love your comments on what you've found to be most helpful as you've sought to prepare and . . . to find peace.

Top 10 Reasons People Don't Have Their Food Storage: Wendy DeWitt

This basic information from Food Storage Specialist Wendy DeWitt is helpful and eye-opening.  Her new DVD "Sensible Food Storage" can be purchased for under $20.00.  It's a much clearer version of this youtube clip --- but with some of the same information.  I believe that it's definitely worth watching!

Signs of the Times

Signs of the Times - Read them HERE

"Events or experiences that God gives to people to show that something important in his work has happened or will soon happen. In the latter days, many signs for the second coming of the Savior have been prophesied. These signals allow faithful people to recognize God’s plan, be warned, and prepare."

Also, book to the left by David J. Ridges --- also gives insights as to the Signs of the Times.
