Too often we bask in our comfortable complacency and rationalize that the ravages of war, economic disaster, famine, and earthquake cannot happen here. Those who believe this are either not acquainted with the revelations of the Lord, or they do not believe them. Those who smugly think these calamities will not happen, that they somehow will be set aside because of the righteousness of the Saints, are deceived and will rue the day they harbored such a delusion. - Ezra Taft Benson

Why Aren't We Prepared?

For many, many years, Prophets of God have told us to prepare for any eventuality.  They've given specific counsel as to spiritual and temporal preparedness.  They've taught us to learn and hone good skills, educate our minds and spirits, rear children in righteousness, and stay away from harmful things.

Yes, we're pretty dumb sometimes.  We think, as did many in the days of Noah, that things won't happen to us here or soon and that we will have 'plenty of time' in the future to prepare.

President Benson, a spokesman for the Lord (who speaks His mind and will) said this:

"Too often we bask in our comfortable complacency and rationalize that the ravages of war, economic disaster, famine, and earthquake cannot happen here.  Those who believe this are either not acquainted with the revelations of the Lord, or they do not believe them.  Those who smugly think these calamities will not happen, that they will somehow be set aside because of the righteousness of the Saints, are deceived and will rue the day they harbored such a delusion."  Prepare for the Days of Tribulation

My counsel, after years of studying, searching, pondering and praying is to forego many things until you are prepared.  Instead of going to dinner and a movie, or expensive family vacations, heed the Lord's warnings FIRST - (always good advice) and....do all you can to get your life in order concerning the things that He has taught.

Then, after putting Him first - all else will fall into or out of place.

"We must put God in the forefront of everything else in our lives. He must come first, just as He declares in the first of His Ten Commandments: “Thou shalt have no other gods before me” (Ex. 20:3).
When we put God first, all other things fall into their proper place or drop out of our lives. Our love of the Lord will govern the claims for our affection, the demands on our time, the interests we pursue, and the order of our priorities.
We should put God ahead of everyone else in our lives."   President Benson; The Great Commandment - Love the Lord

Recently I read a powerful article by President Kimball.  I would encourage all to read and heed.  Entitled "Family Preparedness" he gives some specifics concerning “Why call ye me Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?" (Luke 6:46.)

Some of us who have worked hard to prepare both spiritually and temporally, even on very limited budgets and other types of extreme challenges - feel to continue to warn and encourage those around us to do the same.

The watchmen on the tower (Prophets) see afar off and know what's coming.  We would do well to heed those warnings.   Otherwise - we may be as the people of Noah and regretful of what we put ahead of Prophetic counsel.
