Too often we bask in our comfortable complacency and rationalize that the ravages of war, economic disaster, famine, and earthquake cannot happen here. Those who believe this are either not acquainted with the revelations of the Lord, or they do not believe them. Those who smugly think these calamities will not happen, that they somehow will be set aside because of the righteousness of the Saints, are deceived and will rue the day they harbored such a delusion. - Ezra Taft Benson

How Do We Prepare for the Future?

I run several blogs and used to post to this one more frequently.  I don't keep it up as often as I've sort of moved to a new phase I thought I'd add this little ditty.

For many years I worked hard to prepare temporally; food, clothing, shelter, water, sanitation etc.  I attended many classes, learned how to sprout, grind my own wheat, bake bread and other goods, cook, clean, survive in winter and provide sanitation facilities in emergencies.  I know how to clean water, use some herbs, cook without electricity, and my son even took a HAM radio operators class.

Amongst these things I've also studied about earthquake and pandemic safety and preparedness.  I've sought to be diligent in these matters and do what I could to protect my children from any eventuality.

I still think these things are important; especially if a person has made no preparations at all.  It's great to have important life skills to know how to garden, use basic tools, grow and store food, bottle food etc.  But, even more important, in my opinion, are the foundational principles that underlie all types of preparedness.

Why do we prepare?
Why is that important?
Are we doing it so that we can help others' or just help ourselves?
Are we doing it out of obedience to God or for some other reason?

These questions will help us know better how and what to prepare.

As a single-parent I've had to work harder, perhaps, than most.  Our time, energies and funding were greatly limited.  I've sought guidance from a higher Power to help me know how to best use what I had to prepare for times ahead.  And, He has helped me do that.  I've seen miracles when we were offered apples or apricots for free - if we'd pick them.  I knew that because of my desire to obey we were being blessed beyond our own abilities.

Through it all (including all my many studies and readings about preparedness) I've come to feel for myself that the greatest preparation I've had is in becoming a whole and worthy person, forgiving of all who have hurt or offended me, healthier in both body and spirit, obedient to God's counsel, and at peace in the world around me.

As the world increases in wickedness and the natural disasters come closer to home, the greatest blessing I have right now is PEACE that He will be with me, He will comfort me, and He will continue to help and guide me.

Fear is not of God. It's from the opposite side and he seeks to stir our souls up to contention, dissension, anger towards one another, and...anything that will take peace from us.  We may have to 'fight' against that every day by keeping armor of light upon us.  This comes only through scripture study and sincere prayer as we keep our lives aligned with the things of light that take away the darkness.
